Preface

The App Store is a big place and there are hundreds if not thousands of sudoku apps or apps that have sudoku in them. This blog post tries its best to look at some of the most popular ones and break them down to help you find the one for you.

This is the blog for a sudoku app, so it’s going to be biased no matter how hard I try, so instead, I’ll just leave Not Evil Sudoku to the end of the post and let you decide if you want to scroll down that far.

The Best Sudoku Apps for iPhone

Here’s a comparison of some of the most popular sudoku apps for iPhone on a couple different dimensions:

  1. monetization - how much does the app cost and what kind of monetization does it have
  2. solving experience - how enjoyable is it to solve a puzzle
  3. design - how intuitive and enjoyable is the user interface
  4. features - how much can you tailor the app to your taste

Now, there’s a lot of sudoku apps with hundreds of thousands of installs and a lot of sudoku apps that people claim are beautifully designed, and I can’t possibly cover all of them. Instead, I’ve chosen the middle path:

  1. Two of the most popular sudoku apps off the top of the App Store search results
  2. Two that are highly reviewed/recommended to me
  3. And finally Not Evil Sudoku since this is after all the Not Evil Blog.

If your app appears here and you disagree with my thoughts, feel free to reach out to me: sudoku [at] notevil.app and I’ll be happy to remove it.

This analysis is as of 2025-05-04. These apps may have subseqent updates that change the app's features and monetization.

Concluding Thoughts

If you just want to play a game of sudoku, you can’t go wrong with any of the five. But, here are some closing recommendations based on what your thoughts are on the Cost-Design trade-off:

Cost-Focus: If you don't want to pay a dollar and you don't mind seeing ads then Sudoku.com is all you need.

Design-Focus: If you're looking for an app that feels like what a sudoku app designed by Apple would feel like, Not Evil Sudoku is probably the best fit. If you're looking for a more opinionated design, Good Sudoku is probably a good fit.

And finally if you’re already a subscriber to the NYT Games app and not looking for a lot of customization, NYT Games Sudoku is probably all you need.

NYT Subscriber: Basic but probably good enough. For example something I really need is the ability to lock numbers so that I can place them in several cells at once but for a lot of people this app covers the bases.

And lastly, since it feels mean to single out ▻Sudoku, if you really like wooden themes in your apps then I suppose you should go check it out.

▻Sudoku: For those who were beavers in a past life.
